Understanding Taxation in India
Article 366(28) of the Constitution of India defines the term “Taxation” as follows – “Taxation includes the imposition of any tax or impost, whether general or local or special, and tax shall be construed accordingly."

Direct Taxes: If tax is levied directly on the income or wealth of a person, then, it is a direct tax
Indirect Taxes: If tax is levied on the price of a good or service, then, it is an indirect tax

The Constitution of India grants the power to levy and collect taxes, whether direct or indirect, to both the Central and State Governments. This power is categorized under three lists:

India’s system of fiscal federalism allows for a division of taxation powers between the central and state governments.
