CA Final: Exam Pattern Marks Distribution and Passing Criteria

If you're here, you've likely cleared the CA Intermediate level and made it to the final milestone in the Chartered Accountancy course in India. Reaching CA Final is a huge accomplishment, and this guide will walk you through the important details, exam format, and what you need to pass this last level.

The CA Final is the concluding level of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course in India. Once students pass both groups of the Intermediate Examination, they’re eligible to register for the Final Course. The CA Final exams are held twice a year, in May and November, giving candidates two chances annually to complete their CA journey.

CA Final Exam Pattern

The CA Final is a rigorous, comprehensive exam that tests students' technical, analytical, and decision-making skills across various advanced financial, legal, and management topics. Here’s a breakdown of the CA Final Exam Pattern:

CA Final Subjects with Marks Distribution

Group I

Group II

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the CA Final, students must complete specific academic and training requirements:

  1. Completion of CA Intermediate: Students must have cleared both groups of the CA Intermediate level.
  2. Practical Training: Practical training, also known as articleship, should be completed at least six months before the first day of the month in which the CA Final exams are scheduled.
  3. Advanced Integrated Course: Candidates must complete a four-week Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS).
  4. Self-paced Online Modules: Candidates are required to qualify in all four self-paced online modules introduced by ICAI to be eligible for the final exam.

Exam Structure

The CA Final consists of six papers, each lasting three hours. Each paper combines subjective and objective questions, and a mix of case studies, scenarios, and descriptive questions. The marking scheme does not include any negative marking, and students have the flexibility of attempting the exam in English or Hindi.

CA Final Passing Criteria

The passing criteria for CA Final ensure that candidates demonstrate a strong grasp of each subject as well as a good overall understanding:

  • Passing Both Groups Together: Students aiming to clear both groups in one go must secure at least 40% in each paper of both groups and a minimum of 50% in the aggregate for each group.

  • Passing Groups Individually: Alternatively, students can clear each group separately. To pass each group individually, they must score at least 40% in each paper within a group and a minimum of 50% in the aggregate for that group.

This flexibility allows students to focus on one group at a time if needed, giving them a better chance at balancing their study schedule and preparation.

Chapter-Wise Weightage

ICAI provides a chapter-wise breakdown of the weightage for each subject, giving students an idea of how much focus each section or chapter requires. This weightage breakdown helps candidates structure their studies, prioritize critical areas, and allocate time effectively based on the importance of each section.

By focusing on high-weightage chapters, students can streamline their study plans and optimize their preparation time.

Format of the assessment for Paper 6

Paper 6, "Integrated Business Solutions," which includes multidisciplinary case studies with strategic management, is conducted as an open-book exam. This unique format allows students to bring in and refer to resources during the exam, focusing on practical application rather than memorization. The remaining five papers are closed-book exams.

Exemption system in CA Final

If a student appears for all papers in a group but scores at least 60% in one or more papers without passing the entire group, they are granted an exemption for those high-scoring papers in the next three attempts. To pass, the student must then achieve a minimum of 40% in each of the remaining papers and 50% in aggregate, including the exempted paper(s). If this exemption period expires without passing the group, the student can opt to continue with the exemption, provided they score at least 50% in each remaining paper in the group.

Tips for CA Final Preparation

  1. Study Strategically: Use ICAI's chapter-wise weightage to prioritize high-value areas. Focus on understanding and applying concepts, especially for case-based and multidisciplinary papers.

  2. Practice Time Management: With a mix of subjective and objective questions, time management is key. Practice under timed conditions to ensure you can complete each paper within the allotted 3 hours.

  3. Revise Regularly: Regular revision is essential, especially for theoretical sections. Create summaries for quick review before the exams to strengthen recall.

  4. Take Mock Tests: Mock tests are a great way to assess your preparation, identify weak areas, and become familiar with the exam format. Aim to simulate real exam conditions for an accurate assessment.

  5. Stay Updated: Make sure to stay updated on any ICAI announcements regarding the CA Final. ICAI occasionally updates the syllabus or pattern, and being aware of any changes can be crucial to your preparation.
